How to Avoid Clumpy Mascara and Achieve the Perfect Lash Look

October 08, 2020

We all long for length, volume, definition and maybe a little drama when it comes to mascara. Fluttery, flirty, knockout lashes rank high up on the list of “lash goals”, while clumpy, spidery, stuck together lashes are at the very bottom. Luckily, with a few tips, tricks and fixes, the lashes you dream of should be easily achievable. Read on to find out more!

Tip #1: Start with a Good Foundation

To achieve beautiful, fluttery lashes you’ll first need to make sure that all traces of yesterday’s mascara are long gone. Start with a double cleanse, and use a micellar water, like our Micellar Water Lash Wash, to ensure any leftover dirt, makeup, oil and sebum is removed from the eye area. This gives you the perfect foundation to apply mascara, sans clumps.

Tip #2: Hydrate & Fortify

Keep lashes strong and healthy with an eye gel like our AquaBlur® Hydrating Eye Gel & Primer. This multitasking, multi-use eye gel works to hydrate, soothe, blur and prime the eye area, while also conditioning and fortifying lashes and brows. It creates the perfect base for mascara and helping it last all day and stay flake-free.

Tip #3: Use a Primer

Mascara primers are amazing for separating and adding volume to lashes before your mascara application. We love the Volumizing Primer in our Double-Ended Volume Set because it does just that – separates, adds volume, adds length, and creates a perfect canvas for any mascara.

Tip #4: Less is More

Two coats of mascara should be more than enough to define lashes – anything more could give you clumpy, spidery-looking lashes. Our Volumizing Mascara formula is easy to build without clumping, all while giving lashes the nutrients they need to thrive.

Tip #5: Don’t Pump

Don’t pump your wand in and out of the tube—this only injects air into the product that will speed up the drying-out process, which creates clumps, lumps and more. Instead, twist or wiggle as you pull out the wand to get an even amount of mascara on the applicator.

Tip #6: Know When to Toss

The shelf life of mascara is usually around 3 months, and the clock starts ticking from the first time you open it. If that old tube of mascara has been rolling around at the bottom of your makeup drawer for more than a few months, toss it!

Tip #7: Add in a Serum

Lash serums are perfect for those looking for a little extra oomph in their lash look by giving lashes everything they need to thrive. RevitaLash® Advanced is formulated with essential vitamins and nutrients like Biotin, Peptides, Green Tea Extract, and more, so that lashes stay conditioned, strong, flexible – perfect for beautiful, defined lashes (with or without mascara!).
